In mid-January of this year, the Children’s book group headed up to Midtown to take a behind-the-scenes tour of Grand Central Terminal. We were lucky to have as our tour guide a Grand Central legend: the extremely knowledgeable Danny Brucker. Danny has been giving tours at Grand Central for over two decades, and his energy and ceaseless enthusiasm for the history of the building were infectious.
Last Thursday was a proud day for ABRAMS. Over 550 members of the publishing industry came together to toast Michael Jacobs, President and CEO of ABRAMS. The occasion was Goddard Riverside’s 26th Annual New York Book Fair Gala and Michael was this year’s honoree.
Hello! I’m Dena, author of The Painted Home, and I’m so happy to be a new part of the ABRAMS family. My book debuted in September, and it’s been wonderful seeing the supportive and positive responses growing over time. John Ellis took amazing photographs, styled by Sunday Hendrickson, of each room of my hand painted California ranch home. The book features 20 easy to understand and very customizable DIY how-tos for all kinds of projects from paper-lined vases to hand painted curtains. In addition, there’s a stencil at the back of the book for painting a wall of your own home.
Some people question the usefulness of book trailers. Does it actually help sell books? Do they possess the perfect balance of intrigue and information to make someone go out to their local bookstore or click that “buy” button on their favorite website?
Who knows! What I can tell you is that people seem to love puppies. So when I got the chance to make a book trailer for J. Nichole Smith’s new book Puppyhood: Life-sized Portraits of Puppies at Six Weeks Old I knew the perfect diva dog for the role!
I had the pleasure of working with Phoebe Howard this past year on her book, Joy of Decorating: Southern Style with Mrs. Howard by Phoebe Howard (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2012). What I love most about Phoebe Howard (or Mrs. Howard as she prefers to be known) is not the way she does interior design, but the way she seized her dream of starting her own business after raising four children. Phoebe and her husband opened the first Mrs. Howard design store in Jacksonville, Florida and through clients at the store Phoebe quickly became one of the most sought after designers in the South. Her very first project was featured in a twelve-page spread in House Beautiful! So you can imagine I was so excited to edit this book and to work with someone whose work I had read so much about.
‘Tis the season to be merry and a merry night it was at our Abrams Annual Holiday Party. This year’s party took place at La Nacional. Located on 14th and 8th Avenue, La Nacional is a restaurant within the Centro Español, an establishment that is the “last vestige of one of the largest Spanish enclaves in New York that was affectionately referred to as Little Spain.” The space was the perfect setting for a very social evening, which included some amazing tapas and the best paella I’ve ever eaten! Here are some snapshots from the evening.
With the World Series in full swing, it seems appropriate to revel in a little baseball nostalgia. Here is a selection of several of my favorite baseball photographs from The Big Show: Charles Conlon’s Golden Age Baseball Photographs (Abrams, September 2011) by Neal and Constance McCabe.
