In January I heard that the US was making its first attempt to participate in World Book Night – an organized night that exists to promote reading around the world. The idea was simple: take 30 of the most popular novels out in publication today, and what I imagine to be thousands of volunteers who absolutely love reading, and then stalk, accost, chat up, and just plain engage people on the street who seem like they need a push in the direction of literature.

One of my favorite things about the end of the year is reading all “best-of” lists that come out. I love getting ideas for books to read, TV shows to watch, movies to see, etc., which led me to the idea of enlisting my colleagues help in making a best-of list of our own. I give you the ABRAMS employees’ best non-ABRAMS books of 2011 (and some from before 2011) to give or read:

Welcome to the new ABRAMS Blog! We’re thrilled to embark on this terrifically exciting endeavor. We hope that this can serve as a forum for the diverse range of ideas and expertise that make ABRAMS such a unique place to work. You’ll see a week and a half of posts before this, so we encourage you to read through all of last week’s content as well.

One of the most joyful days of a joyful month arrives on April 14: Poem in Your Pocket Day. The day takes its name from a poem by the noted children’s book author Beatrice Schenk de Regniers. The poem begins:
Keep a poem in your pocket
And a picture in your head
And you’ll never feel lonely
At night when you’re in bed.
The little poem will sing to you
The little picture bring to you
A dozen dreams to dance to you
At night when you’re in bed.
