This past weekend, I attended the Turning the Page: New Stories for Newtown event in Connecticut. The tragedy that befell the people of Newtown at Sandy Hook Elementary School this past December left so many of us wishing we could reach out and help the community recover. This literary festival, cosponsored by the Children’s Book Council (CBC), the C.H. Booth Library’s Books Heal Hearts fund, and many children’s book publishers, including ABRAMS, had an important impact on the community.
Today is national Poem in Your Pocket Day! According to the Academy of American Poets, today is a day to select a poem, carry it with you, and share it with others throughout the day. Poem in Your Pocket is a big day at ABRAMS —including a trip to The Today Show with the children’s group to share some poetry and spread the word, as well as pocket-sized poems on the desk of every employee.

GENIE WISHES is a charming middle-grade novel about a one-of-a-kind fifth grader’s wishes, hopes, and dreams. Written by Elisabeth Dahl, a debut author, the book will be published by Amulet Books, an imprint of ABRAMS, in April 2013. GENIE WISHES is a story about fifth grade—highs, lows, and hamster erasers—as seen through the eyes of the class blogger, Genie. Learn more about GENIE WISHES and more about Elisabeth after the break!

The Brooklyn Book Festival was this past Sunday, September 23rd at Brooklyn Borough Hall. According to the festival, this was the biggest one yet: over 280 authors, 104 panels, and 50 “bookend” events that occurred throughout the week. ABRAMS had two amazing authors attend: Amy Ignatow and Susanna Reich.
The Five Lives of Our Cat Zook is a warm-hearted middle-grade novel about Oona, a curious and spunky big sister, her little brother, Fred, and their adored cat, Zook (short for Zucchini). When Zook gets sick and has to stay with the vet, Oona tells Fred the story of Zook’s previous lives, ranging in style from fairy tale to grand epic to slice of life. Each of Zook’s lives has echoes in Oona’s own family life, which is going through a transition she’s not yet ready to face.
Breakfast and baking are two very important things to me, which is why I was immediately drawn to the beautiful, expansive CakeLove in the Morning: Recipes for Muffins, Scones, Pancakes, Waffles, Biscuits, Frittatas, and Other Breakfast Treats by Warren Brown. I’ve also been to one of Brown’s bakeries in Washington, DC and I’m truly a fan of his work and the incredible path he took to becoming a baker!
